Bushbucks Safaris is a small, proudly Namibian-owned company with a big heart. Behind it stands Abraham Abiatar, who started the business in 2020. Abraham grew up in northern Namibia and has always felt deeply connected to the land, the wildlife, and the traditions of his people. We sat down with him to talk about his journey, his favorite places, and what keeps him motivated.

1. Why did you start Bushbucks Safaris? What inspired you?

I started Bushbucks Safaris in 2020, after I lost my job as a tour guide during COVID-19. Like many others in tourism, I suddenly had to rethink my future.

For a long time, I had dreamed of being my own boss and building something meaningful. I’ve always loved the outdoors, escaping the city, and sharing Namibia with visitors. Our landscapes, wildlife, and cultures are so unique – and I wanted to create a company that makes people feel that magic.

My inspiration comes from Namibia’s beauty, the animals, and our cultural heritage. When I see guests connect with nature, I know I’m doing the right thing.

2. What is your favorite part of Namibia?

That has to be Etosha National Park. It’s a place I never get tired of. The variety of animals, the wide open spaces, and the quiet atmosphere – every visit feels like a fresh breath of air.

3. What is your favorite lodge or campsite, and why?

I would say Gondwana’s King Nehale Lodge, on the northern side of Etosha. It’s special to me because it connects to my roots in the north. The lodge has a lot of Ovambo culture built into its design – from the food to the decorations to the Mboma-style open fireplace. Every time I’m there, I feel a strong sense of home and childhood memories.

4. Which animal are you most excited to spot on safari?

Leopards are my number one. They’re so secretive and blend into their surroundings so well, that every sighting feels like a reward.

I also really like spotted hyenas. Many people think they’re just scavengers, but in Aawambo culture, they actually have a special meaning. We even call them the “luckiest animals.” For me, they’re always a highlight.

5. As a local tour operator, what is your main motivation?

I want to see Bushbucks Safaris grow and create opportunities for others. Tourism can make a big difference in people’s lives. There are still only a few black-owned tour companies in Namibia, and I hope Bushbucks can inspire change.

It’s important to me that the business doesn’t just benefit me, but also creates jobs and supports communities. My dream is that Bushbucks Safaris continues to grow and is passed on to future generations.

6. Why the name Bushbucks?

The Bushbuck is an antelope that lives in Namibia’s Zambezi region, near the riverside wetlands. You don’t find them anywhere else in the country.

For me, they represent something rare and unique. That’s exactly what I want Bushbucks Safaris to be – offering experiences that are as special and one-of-a-kind as the bushbuck itself.

7. Why should tourists visit Namibia?

Namibia is a peaceful country, and our people are known for being warm and welcoming. Visitors are always struck by how genuine and friendly Namibians are. Our capital city, Windhoek, is even known as the cleanest city in Africa.

But beyond that, Namibia is a place of contrasts: vast deserts, endless savannahs, rich wildlife, and vibrant cultures. It’s a country that stays with you long after you leave. Many guests tell me they come here once and already dream of coming back.

At Bushbucks Safaris, we don’t just organize tours – we share our Namibia. Every journey is personal, rooted in local knowledge, and guided by pride in who we are.
